Several demonstrators against the Monarchy were arrested in London during the coronation ceremony of Charles III.
At least 19 environmentalists and six anti-monarchy protesters were arrested, including Republican movement leader Graham Smith, as they tried to demonstrate during the royal procession.
Hundreds of yellow posters, with the inscription "Not my King" (not my king, in Portuguese) were also seized, according to the organization of the protest, which presented photographs as evidence. For the non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch this is a situation that one would expect to happen in "Moscow, not London". Police confirmed that they had made several arrests on suspicion of "disturbing the peace" at various locations. Although the antimonarchy movement continues to represent a small minority of the population, its proportion is increasing especially among young people.
More than 11,000 officers are deployed in London this Saturday, and the police have warned that they will not tolerate anyone who wants to "spoil the celebrations".
